EXHAUSTED BUT SMILING

At the Spain Midyear conference held in Malaga January 18-25, I collapsed into bed at the end of each fourteen hour day exhausted but smiling.

It was my first international trip in over a year. Simply being overseas brings me so much joy! Navigating airports and unfamiliar places, stumbling through social interactions in my broken Spanish, trying new food… so much fun! But being surrounded by friends and not-yet-friends who speak the shared language of missionaries and exchange knowing nods and worship with an intensity that only those whose worship has been restricted by hostile governments can worship… even better!

I wore many hats at Midyear this year. As a People and Culture representative, I discussed Human Resources issues with STINTers as they considered options for what they will do after this one year internship. In this capacity, I got to meet with most of the STINTers from my area of the US. Some of them will be joining staff with us full-time - some to serve in the US and others to return to the international location that has stolen their hearts this year. Others will be returning for a second year of STINT to continue the ministry they began this year. Still others are moving on to marketplace ministry, reaching people in their field of study, equipped with a year of ministry experience and excellent training. Wherever their journey leads them, please pray with me that they will finish this year well and walk with Jesus where He leads.

I also cared for International Staff, spending a lot of time listening to, laughing and crying with, and praying over some of the single gals serving in hard places. They are my kindred spirits, and even though the Lord has led me to serve stateside for now and marry Adam, I understand extended singleness and the special issues single women face in ministry to my very core. I will forever advocate for them. I was actually with these incredible single women the moment we got word that Adam’s petition had been approved and his case moved on to the next stage of the immigration process! Shouts of praise erupted from our table in the dining room.

And I helped with the “STINT to Staff” elements of the conference, connecting with STINTers who plan to join staff this fall to provide answers and resources for the process.

For the first time since taking the International Staff Coordinator role last May, I felt like I was fully living out of my strengths and engaging fully in all of the aspects of this role. And I loved it!

PRAISE AND PRAYER
Praise God for providing a little apartment for us in Kinzers, PA that fits into our tight budget! See address below. The landlords are believers and are so sweet and helpful. I’m excited to unpack boxes I packed in 2017 and settle in!

Praise the Lord for an incredible week in Africa! The days and days of travel were totally worth it to see Adam face to face! The Lord has given us a boost of hope and encouragement. I came home exhausted but smiling!

Please continue to pray for Adam’s immigration process. Now we’re just waiting on the US Consulate to contact him to schedule the interview and medical exam, and then we’ll buy plane tickets!! As usual, it’s taking longer than expected. Pray for endurance to finish out this painfully slow immigration process.

Pray for me, as I feel like I’m juggling a hundred balls at once. There’s just so much going on, and I need Jesus!

Important Conversations

Volume 13 Issue 3 | January 15, 2019

IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS

In December, my teammate Tabitha asked me if I’d join her as she led a cross-cultural training in Boston. I jumped at the opportunity.  Understanding the experiences of others and engaging in meaningful conversations in culturally-sensitive ways is crucial in our mission to reach every student with the Gospel. Not only did we have great conversations about race, ethnicity, and culture with the staff on the Western Suburbs team, I got to meet some of the staff with whom I have been communicating about summer placement for the past few months. It was like meeting old friends… for the first time.

This dear friend made driving 8 hours each way (to and from Boston) a breeze

The theme of important conversations continued as I traveled to Baltimore for Cru Winter Conference /// Baltimore (December 27 to January 1). One of my team leaders, Mike, and I met with several staff who have been stakeholders for our Summer Mission in Wildwood, NJ. Due to a lack of laborers, we had to close Wildwood Summer Mission for the summer of 2019. We met to hear the staff in their plea to reopen Wildwood in 2020 as opposed to closing it indefinitely. We discussed the path forward, and as we parted ways, I was told that they left feeling heard and cared for. It wasn’t an easy conversation, but I was so grateful for the face to face time. I’m praying the trust we built will carry us through this messy situation. Please pray with us that the Lord will continue to draw the people in Wildwood to Himself.

Sophie and Rachel, Pittsburgh interns

While in Baltimore, I also had a chance to meet with four first-year interns for a mid-year check in. Two of the girls are serving in Pittsburgh and were in my very last freshman class at Pitt! It was so sweet to hear stories of what the Lord has done in their lives since I moved away nearly four years ago. All four of the ladies I met with were so sweet. I loved digging into their hearts and lives a little bit and offering both a listening ear and encouragement. I am so grateful for opportunities to care for our staff!

That leads me to my next opportunity. I’ll be heading to Malaga, Spain for one of our mid-year conferences later this week. I look forward to caring for our long-term and one-year laborers serving in Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. Pray for good times of reflection and open and honest conversation as I meet with our International Staff, those laborers who serve long-term. And pray as I talk through future options with our STINTers. We obviously want many of them to join us long-term, but even more than that, we want them to follow the Lord wherever He leads.

PRAISE AND PRAYER
Praise the Lord! I got the results back from my testing in November, and I am cancer free! I am feeling less sick as we figure out some of the causes and triggers of my symptoms. It seems stress is the biggest culprit.

We STILL haven’t heard anything about Adam’s immigration status. I’m afraid the government shut down will prolong our agony for an indefinite length of time. Please keep praying for a favorable decision! After sixteen months apart, I will finally get to see my beloved after Midyear! We will be meeting in a safe location in Africa for a weeklong visit. We will get to do ordinary things like eating together and talking face to face!

Please pray for refreshment for each of the STINTers and International Staff attending each of our mid-year conferences around the globe, including the one I will be attending in Spain.

Staff Allocation - Summer Placement (October 2018)

STAFF ALLOCATION - SUMMER PLACEMENT

Finding the best fit for each individual staff person and his/her family – a placement that meets personal spiritual and relational needs, that provides training and experience, and that offers opportunities to engage in the mission – is so very important to me.

In August my team leaders asked me if I would be willing to step in to tackle the giant puzzle that is the annual summer placement process, and I sort of timidly said yes. I am so glad I did! Even though my desk is piled high with lists and data and notes from conversations, it has been like a breath of fresh air to care for our staff and further our mission in this way.

For most staff in the Campus Ministry of Cru, their regular assignment on campus is only ten months out of the year. That means that every school year, we go through the process of finding summer placements for each staff member. Most staff will go to one of the hundreds of Summer Missions we offer all around the world. They will recruit students to come with them and then disciple and train the students as the students engage in a wide variety of ministry opportunities. Some staff will go through training – training for new Team Leaders, seminary courses with our Institute of Biblical Studies, or cross-cultural ministry training. Others play supporting roles, coaching our new staff and interns as they work on Ministry Partner Development or coaching students as they launch and lead movements over the summer. Even in our small corner of the country, where we only have 165 full-time campus staff in ten states, it feels like there are a million moving pieces.

The verses the Lord used to call me into vocational ministry fourteen years ago have become my daily plea. “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the Harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field” (Matthew 9:37-38). I feel the need for workers so acutely when I look at the number of staff we need to run each of our twelve partnered Summer Missions and the empty list of available staff. Students around the world need to hear and experience the Gospel… and we don’t have the workers needed to make that happen.

Even in the midst of those hard moments, getting to video chat with staff all day every day, hearing their hearts and learning about their desires and needs, brings me so much joy! One young staff gal I have never actually met asked for a second meeting with me because she felt like I was “a safe person” even though we had only video chatted for a few minutes. Praise the Lord!!
Praise and Prayer
Praise the Lord for work that I deeply love and that I’m actually pretty good at doing. I’m loving it!

Loving my current project is distracting me from the ongoing silence and uncertainty surrounding Adam’s immigration process and the uncertainty of some big health issues I’ve been facing for a few months. We should hear from the USCIS literally any day now, and I have major medical testing on November 12. Please pray with us that we will have favorable answers and clear paths forward for both areas. The unknowns are pretty scary. This season is forcing me to depend on the Lord, and He is dependable.

Sending Midshipmen to the Nations - September 2018

SENDING MIDSHIPMEN TO THE NATIONS

Singing “My lighthouse, my lighthouse, I will trust the promise, You will carry me safe to shore” surrounded by a hundred US Naval Academy (USNA) midshipmen – who will be serving our nation in unsafe waters in the very near future – is a surreal experience.
A major element of Cru’s campus ministry is the annual fall retreat. It was always a highlight for me as a student and as campus staff. It’s a time for new students to get connected to our movement – to find out more about who we are and what we’re all about. It’s a time for students to build friendships and make memories. It’s a time to get away from the noise of campus life and go deep with the Lord.  So being asked to join Navy Cru’s fall retreat was such an honor for me.

When I arrived at the camp, the sea of midshipmen in their dress white uniforms made it very clear that this fall retreat would be different from every other fall retreat I have ever attended. The USNA is a unique campus. I felt like I was crossing cultures just learning the language I needed to know to communicate well! Not only do USNA first years have an insanely tough schedule and strict regimen, all midshipmen live under codes and restrictions unique to military academies. Even the silly mixer games we played were different, more intense. And even after an hour of intense exercise on Saturday afternoon, throngs of midshipmen used their free time to go for long runs… instead of napping!

These young people make a commitment after their sophomore year that locks them into a seven year contract with either the Navy or the Marine Corps, and by signing that contract they sign away a lot of control. As I shared about our global ministry with Cru and how they can get involved, I kept these things in mind:

  • Midshipmen can go with Cru on a spring break trip, but our Summer Missions don’t fit their leave schedule
  • The only time a midshipman can go on a year-long STINT with Cru is after sophomore year (that’s early!)
  • If their grades are not excellent before they go, there is no guarantee they will be re-admitted to the academy, which is a weighty decision for so many who have dreamt of serving in the military their entire lives
  • It is likely that every single midshipman will be sent to serve overseas during their five year post-school commitment, and Cru can prepare them to walk with Jesus and make Him known wherever they go
Over the years, we generally have at least one USNA midshipman on a Cru STINT every single year. Those STINTers return to the academy for two more years of school and bring with them passion and excitement for sharing the Gospel. Please pray with us that the Lord will raise up midshipmen to STINT next year. Pray, too that those midshipmen who do not yet have a personal relationship with Christ would come to know him through their involvement in Cru!
Praise and Prayer
Sitting with midshipmen and hearing their stories brought me so much life this weekend! Please pray that they will turn to Jesus in everything - that they will surrender to Him and walk closely with Him.

A few weeks ago I jumped into a big project full-time, and I expect it to be complex and time-consuming. I’ll be assigning all of the staff in cohorts 1-4 (my corner of the US) to their summer assignments. There are a lot of moving pieces, and there are a lot of emotions involved for individual staff members. I want to care well for them!
