INTERNATIONAL SUMMER MISSIONS BRIEFING

Every year, the Mid-Atlantic Global Missions team sends 60-100 staff and students overseas to do ministry in our six partnership locations. Part of that ministry experience is a briefing weekend where we train them how to do cross-cultural ministry well, encourage them in the preparation process, and introduce them to their summer teams. We are sending 72 laborers this summer!

The briefing is a lot of work, but my team is passionate about what we do and where we send to, so it is a busy but really fun season. My roles as the conference coordinator included connecting with the camp and handling the contract and payments, coaching the Summer Missions team leaders as they prepared for the weekend and led their teams, setting the schedule and communicating with all of the speakers, preparing fun interactive elements for the few moments of down time, and organizing mounds of information and notes and details. And I got to share my own experiences with crossing cultures during one session. I loved every minute of it!!

One of my favorite responsibilities was my silly little cultural advice spots throughout the weekend. Because we spend the weekend telling our students what to expect in the cultures they will be entering and helping them learn about their own culture and how it may conflict with their host culture, we wanted to share the reverse advice. I gathered information from guidebooks written for people from other cultures who will be traveling to the US. They were pretty funny! I’ll post some on my blog for you.

On Friday night, major storms made travel difficult for almost every one of the attendees, coming from distant locations. The camp flooded, and the only road in and out was covered by rushing water. It was a logistical nightmare, but we prayed and did our best to get the students into the camp. Everyone was tired and soggy that first night. Saturday was a fourteen hour day and Sunday was a five hour day, and almost every moment was jam-packed.

In the end, the students and staff thanked us for helping them prepare well for the summer. We are excited to see God move!

Praise and Prayer
  • Praise the Lord for the 72 staff and students who have answered His call to step out in faith to reach the nations this summer!
  • Pray for our students as they prepare for Summer Mission through training and ministry partner development in the midst of school and work and campus life.
  • Please pray for the logistics it takes to get six summer teams overseas. Pray for our intern, Abbie, who will be booking flights and finding hotels for airport briefings and debriefs. Pray that each participant will be fully funded to cover summer expenses. Pray for the teams on the ground as they find in-country housing and organize things on that side.
  • Pray, too, for the students our teams will be meeting in their host cultures who will have the opportunity to befriend an American and hear the Gospel!

"WE NEED YOU TO GO IMMEDIATELY"

On a Thursday, my teammate got a call notifying him that one of our STINTers (Short Term INTernational workers) needed to return to the States as soon as possible. The next day, I was asked to be the person to go and walk the team through the transition in light of this crisis situation and help the STINTer get home.

I spent the weekend frantically booking last-minute flights and searching for resources. While we bring STINTers home early from time to time, it is rare enough that resources are hard to find. Global Missions teammates around the country responded with their best (but sparse) advice, and I prayed for wisdom. I also scrambled to do laundry and pack and research M*slim culture I would encounter.

Monday morning I got a quick security briefing, and I drove to DC to beat the impending blizzard. I flew out of DC on Tuesday, after a very uneventful "blizzard”. Had I chosen to fly out of our usual airports (Newark or JFK), my flight would have been canceled and I would have been stuck. Praise the Lord for providence!

I woke up the next morning on another continent, in a country in which I spoke none of the languages. Some of our workers were waiting for me just outside the airport, and they knew the culture and the language and how things work, but before I got to them I would first have to navigate it alone. When I got to the customs officer, about whom I was warned and who I knew would ask me tough questions, I asked him lots of excited questions about his country. He was friendly and chatty and let me pass through easily, an answer to prayer!

My week in-country was full of difficult conversations. The whole team met together for a full day to walk through some debriefing questions, and I had one-on-one conversations with almost every member of the team to listen to, pray for, and care for them. We took time to celebrate all that the Lord has done and to pray for many things. I was blessed with opportunities to experience the culture and see parts of the city that the local team loves. We ate awesome food and drank a lot of really good coffee. In a very quick visit, I got to see some of the really hard parts of living in that culture and fell in love with some really beautiful parts.

The STINTer and I said our goodbyes set off on our journey back to the US on a Tuesday. When we landed, she headed home for two weeks of transition time. The next day I drove home and fought jetlag, and the following day I was back in the office. It was a whirlwind, and I seriously loved every single moment. Even the hard ones. It's a blessing to serve in this role, to cross cultures, and to care for our workers overseas.

Praise and Prayer
  • Please pray for the STINTer who came home from Sam's Place, as she transitions to life and ministry in the US, and for the team she left, as they transition to life without her there.
  • Pray for our International Summer Mission Briefing coming up March 31-April 2. It's a weekend conference designed to prepare the students and staff who will serve in our six partnership locations this summer. I am planning it, and I went to Sam's Place right in the middle of planning time. Pray that all of the details will fall into place!
  • Please continue to pray for me and my fiance Adam. We have had many conversations with Cru in the US and in the UK (which is known as Agape) as well as Adam's immigration lawyer in the UK. There are lots of variables and opportunities, which is awesome but also stressful to sift through.
